A big thank you to everyone who came out yesterday, either as an attendee, a sponsor, an organizer or a volunteer. Everyone who was there yesterday helped make the event successful. We hope everyone had a great time, and walked away with some new knowledge and perhaps a new friend or two.

If you’d like to drop some feedback about the conference, feel free to do so on the comments. While we took feedback informally during the event, it’s always good to get some more after the event is over and people have had a chance to reflect on it. You can also use the contact form for private correspondence.

So thanks again everyone – hope to see people out at a future incarnation of this event!

Getting here
Please arrive at the Museum of Vancouver between 8:00am and 8:30am as the day’s sessions will begin promptly at 8:50am. You can view the full schedule here.

Driving
From the Burrard Bridge take your first right onto Chestnut and follow the signs to the Museum of Vancouver / Space Centre.

By Bus
The #22 MacDonald bus from downtown will take you along Cornwall off the Burrard Bridge. Get off at the first stop, at Cypress, and walk down to the Museum.

Parking
Pay parking is in effect since it is a City of Vancouver parking lot. Easy Park charges $10 for all day parking however the Museum informed us that if you keep driving down Chestnut, you’ll find the Coast Guard parking lot where they only charge $4 for the entire day.

Registration
Upon arrival check-in at the registration table. There you will receive a few swag items, WordPress buttons, and most importantly your lanyard for the day. You must wear this at all times as it is your admission pass to enter the museum as well as the social later on in the evening at Granville Island.

You may also enter a raffle to win two tickets to see Bard on the Beach June 22nd.

Venue / Rooms
WordCamp Vancouver is taking place in three different spaces at the Museum of Vancouver.

Main Gallery
The Main Gallery will be open to the public but we have an adjacent room to ourselves. It’s a great collaborative space with comfy seating and floor-to-ceiling windows. In our adjacent room we’ll have coffee, the Genius Bar / Help Desk, sponsor and swag tables, and chairs. This will be the location of our welcome and closing address as well as Dave Olson’s talk in the afternoon.

Walley Gallery
This is our main room for talks. It has a panoramic view of the beach and North Shore mountains. To get to the Walley gallery you can follow the signs that will be posted. It is located on the same floor as the Main Gallery.

Lunch Room
The lunch room is downstairs, past the vending machines and washrooms. It is an open space with a full kitchen that will have tables and chairs setup for lunch. Food will be served buffet style so you can either sit in the room to have lunch or head out to the patio space that will be opened up for us that day. It overlooks a duck pond and Vanier Park. Wayfinding signs and volunteers will help direct you to the lunch room.

WiFi
Thanks to Rogers, we will have WIFI at the event. The museum has its own setup that will be open however we will have supplemental access for all. If logins are required those will be made public on the day of the event.

Food
WordCamp Vancouver will offer the following nourishment breaks

Coffee
There are two coffee times, the first is in the morning when you arrive and the second is in the afternoon. Thanks to Ethical Bean for partnering with us on this.

Lunch
Lunch will be served downstairs in the lunchroom. Catering will be provided by Michi Sushi (with vegetarian options) and we will have veggie, meat and cheese platters as well as an assortment of buns. Drinks such as pop and water will also be available and there are several vending machines on this same level at the museum.

Social
Once we wrap up the day at WordCamp (around 4:00pm) there will be a social for all attendees over at the Granville Island Brewing taproom on Granville Island at 6:00pm.

Food
There will be snacks provided however it will not be a full dinner. Attendees are encouraged to explore Granville Island and grab a full meal before the social if they are so inclined.

Getting there
To get there, you can either take a water taxi from Vanier Park, carpool, or take transit. For transit, walk out to Cornwall Ave then up to Burrard for an East-bound bus that will take you under the Granville Street Bridge. Get off at that stop and head down to Granville Island. The Brewery Taproom is across from the Kids’ Market. You must bring your lanyard in order to be admitted and to collect your drink ticket.

Getting home
Please plan ahead to have a safe ride home. There are plenty of taxis on Granville Island and there is bus service just up the road on 4th. There is also parking in case you carpool and have a designated driver.

Leanpub was our only Oak sponsor for WordCamp Vancouver, and we wanted to help promote their product and introduce everyone to what they are doing. The sponsorship money we collected help made things like lunch and the social possible, and without sponsors the tickets would have had to have been more than double the price to offset the costs. Here’s some information about Leanpub – you can check them out at leanpub.com.

——-

Imagine a world in which authors can actually make money writing books…

Imagine a world in which authors know who their readers are, and can have a meaningful conversation with them about their books—before they’re even “published”…

Imagine a world in which authors could apply Customer Development and Lean Startup principles to the process of writing and publishing a book…

If you imagine that world long enough, you realize that the authors who know their readers the best are bloggers, and that the future of publishing is turning blogs into books. Automatically.

That’s the future that Leanpub is working to create, using WordPress MU as the foundation for a new system of self-publishing. Currently PDF is supported, with iPad and Kindle support (for the geeks: EPUB and MOBI) coming soon.

Go to http://leanpub.com to create, curate, edit and publish a book based on your blog today. You can go from a blogger to an e-book author in under an hour…

There is going to be a panel during WordCamp Vancouver focusing on using WordPress as a CMS. To gauge audience interest, the panel members have asked the following to be posted on the site. If you could take the time to leave a comment, that would be great and would help the panel members target their content.

—-

At the 2010 SXSW Interactive Festival designers debated whether or not WordPress is killing web design. The idea is that WordPress and other CMS are constraining designers to think outside the box and turning them into lazy designers. This panel discussion revealed that WordPress is not the culprit, designers are the ones being lazy when relying on existing themes.

WordPress is a very powerful tool that allows you to create any site you want. Cameron Cavers, Dave Zille and Christine Rondeau have been building sites using WordPress as a CMS and will discuss how best to approach this avenue. What you need to consider when planning your website; what are the limitations; are there any limitations… We’ll also show a few examples and the code used to create sites that no longer look anything like WordPress sites.

If you are interested in using WordPress as a CMS and have a question for the panel or would like to share some of your code, please leave it in the comments and we’ll plan our panel discussion accordingly.

We’ve been working hard to try and put a social event together for everyone. Thankfully we’ve finally managed to get all our ducks in a row, so I want to announce what the plans are.

There will be a social event at the Granville Island Brewery Taproom running between 6pm and 9pm in the evening of June 12th. The conference will end around 4pm, which will give everyone a bit of time to grab a bite to eat on their own somewhere, and then head on over to the social.

Because space is limited, only those people that have valid tickets to WordCamp Vancouver will be able to attend. We’ll be giving everyone a drink ticket or two (depending on the final budget), and will also be selling additional tickets during the event. There will be plenty of beers on tap as well as some wine, so it should be a great chance for everyone to hang out, mingle with each other, talk about the conference, and most importantly, have a bit of fun.

We’re really looking forward to it, and we’ll see you all there!

We’re less than two weeks away now from WordCamp Vancouver, and it’s shaping up to be a pretty exciting event. There have been a few small logistical changes that I wanted to point out. We had originally thought that WordCamp Vancouver would have two tracks, one for general blogging and one for development. Unfortunately the logistics of that turned out to be problematic. So instead of having two small tracks, we’ve combined both tracks and are instead having one larger track, which will address various aspects of WordPress, including development.

The majority of the speakers have been announced, and there’s also a rough schedule up as well. The schedule will most likely change, but it’s pretty close. We’re still waiting for confirmation from two speakers, and once those come in we’ll update all the pages and hopefully finalize the schedule.

Lunch wasn’t originally planned for the event, but thanks to various sponsorship sources, it will now be provided. We’ll do our best to come up with something that most people will enjoy, and announce that before hand. We’ll also have coffee, juice, water, and various soft drinks on hand for the coffee breaks and during the event.

While we can’t promise anything yet, we’re doing our best to open up some more tickets for the event. There are currently about 30 people on the wait list, and we’re hoping to let in another 20 or so. We just have to figure out some of the logistics of that to make it happen.

We’re really looking forward to June 12th — we have a great lineup, and I’m sure everyone will have a great time. We’ll do another announcement before the event, so check back here next week for updates.

We’re debating putting together a little genius bar for WordCamp Vancouver, similar to what you’d find at the Apple Store. The purpose of the genius bar would be to have a few WordPress experts on-hand to help people in attendance with any problems that they may encounter. In order to pull it off though, we’d need various people to volunteer a bit of time during the day to help out with the genius bar, probably in shifts of 30 – 45 minutes.

So if you’re very knowledgeable with WordPress, are going to be attending WordCamp Vancouver and are also interested in possibly helping out by putting in a shift at the genius bar, please drop a comment below. Thanks.

We’ve opened up ticket sales for WordCamp Vancouver, and announced the first of many speakers. Tickets are currently priced at $45 and included access to the event, snacks and beverages throughout the day, a full lunch, and access to an informal social in the evening. As we are capacity limited, we expect tickets to go fairly quickly, so make sure you grab one as soon as possible if you intend on going.

We’re really looking forward to meeting everyone and putting on a great event. The venue is absolutely spectacular, and it’s shaping up to be a great time. You can purchase your tickets at on our EventBrite page.

We still are looking for a few more sponsors for the event. Sponsorship helps us keep the ticket prices affordable while allowing us to throw an even better event for the Vancouver and WordPress community. If you’re interested in being a sponsor, please check out our sponsorship packages.
